Hong Kong - Star Ferry
Leaving Hong Kong Island
- DESCRIPTION
This is the famous Star Ferry leaving Hong Kong Island; an image I made in 2012. The Star Ferry has been running between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island since 1888 and currently carries over 70,000 passengers a day.
The day I made this image was a very humid & hot August day--not my favorite weather, but the climate fit the tropical landscape around me so that made it bearable for me--the weather wasn't bothersome, it was exotic! Speaking of exotic, I want to point out that while this is East Asia, and very far from my home, it was interesting how familiar the area felt to me. Hong Kong struck me as being the New York City of the East. It reminded me of something like Chinatown, but on a massive scale.
Of course, that comparison may be sort of an oversimplification, but I say it because I want to explain that this is not a dauntingly foreign place to visit, but actually a really lovely place to experience. This is important for me to explain because when I first told some people about our plans to go to Hong Kong for a month I was surprised how many people were afraid for me (and it wasn't just the Americans who felt that way).
I heard everything from its dirty (because SD, LA, TJ & NY aren't?) to "they eat cats and have them strung up in the wet markets on display" (which, by the way, is not true). Please, dear friends, do not let other people's fears ever prevent you from exploration and travel.
Go places that challenge you and challenge what you think you know. Keep testing if what you are talking about is true, keep proving to yourself that you are the kind of person you want to be by exploring. #endofrant
