Josephine Butler 3D Asset Process

In the beginning, when we were conceptualizing the project as a whole. A big part was going to involve 3D assets. So I began my process looking for different Images for what kind of assets we would need. So our first obstacle, finding information on Josephine Butler. I had found a couple of articles that did show some major influence she was a part of and led. I think a major event was how she helped draw attention to the poor living conditions in her city, the Anacostia.

Which led her to challenge the leadership, the city council of DC. Along with that, the Hat Butler would wear during most marches. Showing all the buttons and groups she supported and was a part of. This would be our crown jewel; we’d use this as a major part of the project. So, from here, I began to make button assets as 3D models to use. The main button in the Picture is the Statehood button, a group prioritizing the neglected issues the city and its people face every day. So here was the next issue: finding and/or generating buttons that represent the movement Butler was a part of.

Originally, I found an image of the Statehood button that I used. Using the UV editor in Maya 2026, I was able to position the image on the FBX file of the model. And it worked well, but there were some issues with the edges of the image. Eventually, it would be replaced by another, better image found by Garrett Wright.

I then had to make multiple changes to the design of the button models, which will be updated as the project progresses. I'm currently on v.4 (version 4) for each. I have been working on creating the 3D asset of the historical marker. I have also been creating our own buttons based on the ones on Butler’s hat.  I made one showing her standing up for workers’ rights.
