If you've ever seen a package with a pattern for sewing at home, the flats are those technical drawings that are usually on the back of the package. The ones I have here are hand drawn in pencil. Usually they would be inked, and that is the next step after this. So the fashion illustration is to show the artistic concept of a piece of clothing, if you will, and the flat is the technical drawing that explains how the garment is actually constructed (usually there is also a back, but it's not shown here).
